A Reflection on Democracy and the U.S. Election
First and foremost, I extend my congratulations to the American people for exercising their democratic right to choose their leader. Democracy thrives on the principle of allowing citizens to select those who will govern them, and in this case, they have chosen former President Trump. Regardless of differing opinions, the majority’s voice has been heard and deserves respect. To all Nigerian Americans who participated in this process, whether you supported or opposed him, I commend you for taking part in the democratic process.This election reveals an essential truth: despite varying circumstances, actions, and perceptions, outcomes often reflect the complex nature of democracy and human behavior. President Trump’s journey to re-election underscores that some individuals possess unique attributes that deeply resonate with their supporters. It serves as a reminder of the unpredictability and influence inherent in leadership choices.
Lessons for Immigrants and the Nigerian Diaspora
Understanding Your Voice: As immigrants, particularly in foreign democracies, we must accept that our voices may not always carry the weight we expect. The outcome of this election highlights that human nature can often be self-centered, prioritizing individual interests over collective benefits. It also signals that times and seasons change, and a "pharaoh who knew not Joseph" may indeed arise. This emphasizes the importance of investing in our homeland, Nigeria, where our voices and contributions can truly make a difference. With well-thought-out strategies, perseverance, and collaboration, we can express ourselves, educate our communities, and take meaningful action to propel our nation forward.
Action and Strategy: We must take proactive measures to address the challenges that hinder our influence in Nigeria. It is essential to remind ourselves that no foreign nation will prioritize our interests over theirs. It is our shared responsibility to take ownership of Nigeria’s future and work collectively for positive change. Simply voicing complaints on social media will not help. What will create a real impact are strategic and collaborative efforts that push government officials at all levels to lead with integrity and accountability.
Shifting Our Focus to Nigeria
There is no better time than now to channel our efforts into rebuilding Nigeria and advocating for good governance. Our goal should be to create a country where citizens do not live in fear or spend significant resources attempting to “japa” (emigrate) in search of better opportunities. Losing hope in Nigeria is not the solution. Instead of pursuing a path of emigration, we should aim to build a nation that becomes a beacon of innovation and progress. Let us embrace the concept of “japada”—a commitment to look back, invest, and develop our homeland..
The Future of Technology and Implications for Nigerians
Under President Trump’s administration, significant technological advancements are anticipated, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and robotics. As an IT professional with expertise in these fields, I recognize the implications of the close relationship between the president and influential tech leaders like Elon Musk. This signals a future where factories could become fully automated, self-driving vehicles become mainstream, and AI is applied at scale across industries such as healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, and finance. This technological shift will inevitably lead to job losses in many sectors, while new opportunities will emerge—mostly technology-driven.
The Big Question: Where does this leave Nigerians, whether as American citizens or those navigating immigration processes? This shift challenges us to be proactive and deliberate about our role in a rapidly changing global landscape.
Embracing Technology and Building Resilience
AI Knowledge and Skills: Every Nigerian must understand AI and its far-reaching implications. These technologies are reshaping the future of work and life, and we must embrace them not only for personal growth but also to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Collaboration and Investment in Nigeria: We need to collaborate and harness technological advancements to develop Nigeria. Building a secure, sustainable homeland should be our priority. We must ask ourselves: if unforeseen challenges arise, how prepared are we? What measures do we have in place if citizenship or residency becomes subject to greater scrutiny?
A Personal Reflection and Call to Action
A close friend of mine, who had been a naturalized U.S. citizen for over a decade, shared an experience that left a profound impression. One day, while driving in Chicago, he encountered a reckless driver who shouted at him, “Go back to your country.” These words, repeated multiple times, cut deeply. When he returned home, he looked at his American passport—it was intact, yet the statement lingered in his thoughts for days. Ultimately, he decided to make strategic investments in Nigeria by acquiring and developing properties and investing in agriculture and the stock market. This shift in focus underscores the need for our government to create enabling environments that encourage investment back home. Reliable power supply is not optional, particularly in an AI-driven world; security must be ensured, and government spending on overheads should be significantly reduced. That day, he realized that no matter the passport he held, his identity as a Nigerian was undeniable.
The Lesson: Regardless of our citizenship, we must never forget our roots. A new Nigeria can emerge, but it requires collective action and steadfast commitment.
The Need for Accountability and Civic Engagement
The political class in Nigeria constitutes less than 5% of the total population, meaning that we, the citizens, have the power to drive change. Our education, skills, and talents mean little if we do not engage with local governments, state representatives, and other officials to express the true needs of the people. Let us be responsible citizens who uphold strong values and contribute positively to society.
Conclusion: A United Call for Action
We must unite, wherever we are, to hold our government accountable and advocate for a nation that serves all Nigerians. This is a call to uphold principles of good governance, act justly, and instill in our children a deep love for their heritage. We have collectively shaped the Nigeria we see today, and it is our duty to join hands and repair it. To those in power: lead with the fear of God, knowing that one day, you will be called to account for your actions.
Remember, we are Nigerians first and possess the power to transform our country into a land of hope and prosperity. Let us collaborate, act strategically, and work to build a Nigeria we can all be proud of.
